MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
In many ways, an association resembles an iceberg because the part that is visible is much smaller than what lies beneath the surface. Yet, in many respects, it is even more like a tree—whose roots perform such an essential role that without them, even the mightiest oak or elm would eventually topple and die.
Every tree we see represents the visible side of an organization—its publications, special reports, meetings, public relations efforts, and outreach activities. Some parts can be compared to the branches, foliage, needles, berries, nuts, and fruit that everyone notices and appreciates.
But beneath the surface, out of sight, lies some of the organization’s most important work. The roots upon which the visible association depends include the Board of Directors, T-ROC, the CTTA Foundation, committees, and staff. These roots nourish the organization with ideas, dedication, and energy that allow it to continue growing and thriving.
They provide continuity, encourage growth, and serve as the firm foundation that keeps the trunk and branches standing strong. Many vital services are performed behind the scenes—often unnoticed by members and the public alike—yet they are essential to the survival and success of the organization.
If you want your “tree” to continue growing, be sure to nourish the roots.
